Evaluation Activity 3

Unfortunately I didn't have the software for this evaluation activity, Although I did make the voice over I didn't have that editing software at home to put it in my movie and upload to youtube. However, Here is the script I wrote for it,
Warp Films will be producing my movie. Because they are a distribution and production company who specialise in independent British films and horror movies. This is exactly what my movie is so I have chosen them to produce and dsstribute my movie. They are known for producing different films that not many other production companies would. They therfore have an audience who are more interested in chaallenging and shocking films. Which is the audience I am aiming to appeal to.Warp films was origionally a label so they obviously appeal to a more underground audience rather than a massive bockbuster movie audience. The word ‘Warp’ means to twist or to turn something out of shape. This could indicate at warp films naturte to produce fidderent or strange movies. Their logo looks very like RKO’s. RKO was a production and distribution company in the 30’s. That have produced many classical movies.
A production company is responsible for supervising the filming from concept to completion, and they hold the sole legal and financial responsibility of the movie as a whole.
The money for my film will come from the companys the invest in warp films such as UK film council, the circle company, small local organisations, or even if it is a big movie the the government.
In my titles I have put the two main actors, the director and producer, the executive producer, and who the film was accosiated with and the novel in which the movie is based upon and I have done it in this order because I wanted to follow the codes and conventions of a scary movie, so copied ‘The shinings’ title format. But the reason why the people are there in the first place is either to make the movie more appealing, by say introducing famous actors or directors at the beggining and also to represent the companys that have invested, to make sure there name is known. My film is similar institutionally to other small british independent films such a Shifty and Hush. Shifty is about two friends who leave very dofferent lifestyles, and when they meet again things are all going wrong, it was produced by BBC films. The reason my movie is like them, is because it is a small British film, not a massive blockbuster. This ties in wtih Warp film being my production and distribution company as they produce small independant British films.

Evaluation Activity 5

Evaluation Activity 7

Overall I would say my preliminary task was surprisingly harder to do. As we were giving specific shot types we had to such as, match on action, and the 180 degree rule:

Here is an example match on action

Here is an example of the 180 degree rule

And in my final movie I only did WS, as I didn't want close ups of my characters of props setting the theme of a horror movie, instead I used music and fonts to do this. However, saying that, the preliminary task had less pressure, for two reasons; We did it in groups of three so it wasn't particularly loads of pressure on me, and the second reason was, it was a preliminary task, so whatever mistakes I made I could learn from for my actual final opening title sequence.

Here are some examples of my Wide Shots.

Some things I had definatley improved on for my final product was editing, in my preliminary i used simple cuts, and later learnt when doing my final task how to do fades, music editing, typography etc, even though I didn't use some of the camera shots I was taught in my final product I did do more technical filming, such as steady panning, which I wasn't able to do yet when filming my preliminary task.

Here is an example of my panning. Obviously I cannot show panning with still pictures but by taking four and putting them together in this storyboard effect, you can see the effect of the pan.

Here is an example of a fade.

Here are two examples of my typography, as you can see, I learnt how to de a range of effects on the typography, such as gradients and shadows.
In comparison to the above shots, here I have placed a simple still shot from my preliminary, without ant typography, or effects, to show how I have improved since my preliminary.

I struggled with my final piece to find a time when I could get all the equipment I needed together at once, and also have all props, actors and everything else together at once. This clearly tells me that to create a successful piece of work careful planning in advance is the best thing to do.

As I have previously said, I have learnt a huge amount from this project, and have made huge progress from my preliminary task, however I would like to continue to improve as there are some things I think I could have done better, for example, better editing; cuts, fades, double screens etc.

Evaluation Activity 6

I used youtube converter to convert my music from youtube onto a a music file that I could play on my movie.

I used Windows media player to view my files on the computer once I had imported them but before I had imported them onto the editing program.

I used you tube to research music for my film.
I used adobe photoshop to split screen my images for my evaluation tasks.

I used Blogger to record all of my progress and steps towards my finished movie.

I used adobe pemier pro to edit my movie.

I used the camera to Film my project.

I used the tripod, to steady the camera, and to have the camera filming the angle I wanted when I did my filming.

Evaluation Activity 4

The audience for movie would  be groups of friends, whether it’s young adults aged 17- 21 and older adults; 30- 50. It will appeal to friends as it is not a movie someone would watch alone, it is also made to appeal to a more grown up audience, so can be watched on a Friday night in with a dinner. Some examples of people who may watch it are:

These are examples of the types of people who would watch the movie; friends going out to a weekday cinema showing, or a couple enjoying a tense movie together, or a group of girlfriends, enjoying the thrill of the movie. The type of people I expect to watch ‘The Victims’ are people with everyday lives, standard incomes who shop at standard highstreet shops, such as H&M, GAP, and Office, People who listen to normal music, such as indie and old school pop; the type of people who enjoy their lives and their friends, and who are up for a good/ different/ very challenging movie full of suspense.

Evaluation Activity 2

Some similarities between these two characters are; their both the female protagonists in the scary movies they are playing in. They are both featuring in scary movies. Although they do play different roles, such as Nicole Kidman plays a mum in ‘The Others’ and Hester Carter plays a girlfriend in my movie ‘The Victims’. They are both strong characters, with strong appearances whihc help them fit the roles of their chracters, such as Hester’s fiery red hair, which suggests danger. And Nicole Kidmans, very innocent look plays a massive part of her character, being very vulnerable. They do wear different clothes in their movies as Nicole Kidman plays a mother she has much more grown up mature look and Hester Carter wears much more relaxed young adult clothes. Another similarty between them is they both are disturbed by supernatural being in their movies. Overall, they are very similar in their roles in their movies ‘The Others’ and ‘The Victims’ but they have very obvious diffences, in age and appearance.

Evaluation Activity 1

The Title of the film- The title of myfilm is 'The Victims', I chose this title as it expresses what the movie is about; a young couple who move house, and start to experience super natural events, which eventually turns them mad. The title suits it as the couple are victims. As you can see above the format of the title is very bold, I did thia to make it more eye catching, I also gave it a gradient to make it more scary looking, which ties in with the genre of my movie; horror. The format of the writing is very typical of horror movies which is one reason why my movie follows the codes and conventions of horror movies. I have however broken the codes and conventions of a typical film, by placing my title at the end of the opening title sequence rather than at the beggining.

The Setting and location- I chose this very urban setting to break the codes and conventions of horror movies. In many of them people live in either suburbs or the country, for example, 'The Shining' and 'The Hills have Eyes'. By breaking the codes and conventions it has allowed my movie to be different and independant. There are two main locations used in my movie which are the two houses, one is the one the couple is leaving and the other is the one the couple is moving too. I chose the first house as it is a small house, and has an obvious difference to the second one which is a big semi-detached house, these diffrences suggest they are moving. I made sure it was a dark rainy day the day I filmed, which suggests darkness in the movie. However I did film in a friendly looking area, which is shown throgh a couple of the shots by shots of the park and family cars etc. This has the effect of surpriseo n the audience as they will be shocked that such bad things happen to them.

Costmes and Props- I din't use many props in my film which is a big difference from most other opening title sequences. However I did use a cardboard box to suggest there moving house. And also a hand bag for my female charater again, just to suggest their moving.
The costumes I chose were very simple, specifally so their outfits didn't give anything away about the characters tastes/fashion/interests etc. And so one the audience watched it they wouldn't immediatley focus on the characters but instead what they are doing; moving house. This makes my movie very unconventional, as many opening title sequences are used to portray a crtain image of main protaganists in their movies.

Camera work, Editing and Special Effects- The camera work and Editing I used was very conventional for a opening title sequence, just simple pnning and fades. As my film is a horror movie, I used the opening title sequence to biuld up a suspicious nervous atmosphere, so didn't feel neccisary to use any over dramatic editing or special effects.

Font Style- The font style I used was very simple, again I used my opening title sequence to biulld up an atmosphere rather than show off famous names or biuld up a character which is why I only used simple fonts, however I did add a shadow onto to the font, which gives it a more scarymovie feel. And makes it follow the codes and conventions of a scary movie.

Story and how the opening sets it up- The story for my movie is a couple move to a new house and everything goes down hill from there. I used my opening title sequence to start of that strory, so shot the couple moving house. This is very typical of a scary movie, an example is 'The Shining' and therefor makes my movie follow the codes and conventions of a typical movie. My shots include, the couple putting the last bits in the car, then driving down different roads, then arriving at their new house, and getting out and opening the door, this is all shown above, and is how my opening title sequence setsup the story of my movie.

Genre and how the opening suggests it- My two main ways of shoing how my movie is a horror movie in my opening title sequence is music and fonts. As said previously I used fonts with shadows and gradients, which gave them a scary feel. I also put scary classical piano music in the background, whixch really creates a nervous feeling in the audience. Using music to express your theme in a movie is very typical, this is therefor another reason why my movie follows the codes and conventions.

How characters are introduced- My characters are introduccedin the first shot, they don't make a dramatic appearance thyey just leave the house together. By making their introduction very calm it had the effect i wanted; the characers weren't the main focus of my opening title sequence.
